A headshot is often the first impression someone gets of you online. Start with where the photograph will be used, then choose clothing that suits your role and feels natural to wear.
Start with the purpose
- LinkedIn, CV and professional profiles: aim for smart, polished and approachable.
- Company websites and staff pages: match the level of formality and colour palette of your organisation.
- Personal brands and small businesses: a more relaxed or creative look can work well, particularly when it reflects your usual style.
Choose solid colours and a good fit
Solid colours generally photograph better than busy patterns, large checks, strong stripes or prominent logos. Navy, charcoal, deep green, burgundy, cream and soft neutral colours are dependable choices. A subtle reference to your company’s brand colour can work well in a tie, blouse, scarf or accessory.
Choose clothes that fit comfortably around the neck and shoulders and do not need constant adjustment. Simple, well-fitting pieces usually look more confident and date less quickly than very fashionable ones.
Useful outfit combinations
Smart corporate
A dark or mid-tone jacket with a plain shirt or blouse. Add a restrained tie or simple jewellery if it suits your role.
Business casual
A fitted knit, open-neck shirt, blouse or polo with a jacket gives a professional but less formal result.
Creative or personal brand
Use texture, a signature accessory or a considered touch of brand colour rather than a loud pattern.
Think about the background
On a dark background, lighter tops can separate you cleanly from the setting. On a lighter or mid-tone background, deeper colours such as navy, forest green or burgundy often work well. For workplace sessions, I will help choose an outfit and position that keep you distinct from the environment.
Hair, makeup, glasses and grooming
Aim to look like your best workday self. Style your hair as you normally would for an important meeting. Natural, matte makeup photographs well; heavy shimmer can catch the light. If you wear glasses every day, wear them for the headshot—clean the lenses and bring a second pair if you have one. Facial hair is best trimmed the day before rather than immediately before the session.
What to bring
- A spare shirt, blouse or top.
- A second jacket or layer for a different look.
- A comb or brush and anything you use for small touch-ups.
- Your glasses case or an alternative pair.
